Description

We are thrilled about the Lord's call for us to demonstrate biblical hospitality and share the good news about Jesus Christ to the international community at Southern Methodist University (SMU). It is exciting to see the doors that the Lord has opened over the past couple of years, and we are humbled at the opportunity to serve Him in this way in partnership with the local church.

One of the most exciting things about our call to this ministry is that it started three years ago when we returned from serving overseas. Chris was asked to help start a ministry to international students with our local church. After lengthy research, developing relationships at the university as well as other campus ministries, and through much prayer, it became clear that the Lord was opening doors for ministry at SMU. Many international students later, what began as a vision of one church is culminating in a concerted effort of the Presbytery to start a new work.

In the fall of 2014 we will be launching RUF International (RUFI) at SMU in Dallas, TX. Our ministry will primarily be focused on reaching more than 1300 international students from over 75 nations.

Having recently graduated from Redeemer Seminary in Dallas, TX, Chris is currently serving as a pastoral intern at Park Cities Presbyterian Church as he prepares for licensure and ordination in the PCA. We are also in the process of raising support to launch this new ministry.

We invite you to enter into this ministry alongside us in prayer and through financial support. We would love the opportunity to visit with you and share more about what God is calling us to at SMU.

A Cross-Cultural Thanksgiving

When we think about holidays, many of our thoughts run to family and traditions. However, it is interesting to think that the first ‘holiday’ we think of that was celebrated in the New World was actually a cross-cultural holiday. Thanksgiving brought people from two different cultures, languages and ‘worlds’ together to enjoy fellowship around a meal. This November, we got a small taste of this at the second annual Thanksgiving Potluck for international students hosted by Park Cities Presbyterian Church (PCPC).

Every international student that I spoke to after the dinner expressed how grateful they were for the opportunity to share in an American tradition. Moreover, they were blown away at how welcomed and well-received they felt by their new American friends.

The evening led to many great stories of students and church members connecting and building relationships. One of those encouraging stories from the evening was the way the young adult community at PCPC interacted with the students. After having a great time getting to know the students at dinner, our young adults invited them to their Friendsgiving party down the street for hot chocolate and a bonfire. We heard back from students and young adults alike that it was a great time! I hope that we continue to learn together how to invite others into our communities and the ordinary spaces of our lives – be it international students, neighbors or co-workers. What an incredible opportunity for the nonbeliever to witness the community of the Body of Christ.

Chris, Haynes (2 years old), Sarah
We're back and have big news to share!  After a long hiatus (filled with three years of seminary, having a baby, working, normal life, etc) we are back to the blogging world.  We are excited to embark on this new adventure of working with international students at SMU.  Over the past two years we have had the opportunity to get to know several of these students and it warms our hearts to hear Haynes constantly ask for them by name.  We may not be headed back to the other side of the world again, but we are looking forward to engaging the nations with the gospel right here in our backyard.
